Many people worry about cutting holes in the roof, but adding a skylight is actually easier than installing a window. Most skylights come with flashing systems that will seal the roof effectively. The roof opening is framed with headers–framing lumber run horizontally across the opening, securely nailed to the rafters to support the structure. Headers are cut from lumber the same size as the rafters.
The ZIP roofing system is composed of ZIP roof panels and ZIP seam sealing tape. The entire roof-framing surface should be sheathed before the seam sealing tape is applied. The roof deck should be installed from the lowest point on the roof to the highest. The tape is best installed from the highest portion of the roof to the lowest. The following installation steps are presented as a general outline of the installation process. Safety practices should be followed at all times.
Remove the interior trim around the existing door. Measure the height, width, and depth of the framed opening. Working from outside the house, set the bottom of the door against the opening, then raise the door into place. Temporarily insert new shims near the top of the frame to hold it. With shims, adjust the door-frame so that it is plumb and square in the opening. Insert shims between the door-frame and studs at the hinge locations. Shims keep it level, plumb and square in the rough opening. Be sure to have at least 1/8” of clearance between the jamb and rough frame. Drive screws through the hinges and shims.
Lead flashing requires replacement if you see or feel leaks around your chimney or see water stains on your ceiling. You should also reinstall chimney flashing before re-shingling your roof if you discover tears in the lead.
Architectural shingles have a much heavier mat base than regular asphalt shingles. This is why they are much stronger. The base is a mixture of asphalt and fiberglass. Colored mineral granules are layered on top and the backs are treated with a special coating.
The first thing you want to do when painting a home is remove dust, dirt, and grease spots with water, a little mild dish-washing detergent, and a sponge or rag. Rinse ceiling and walls with clean water to remove the soap residue.
When installing an exterior door dry-fit it in position to make sure it fits.

First make sure that the roof decking is 100% clean of dust and particles that will show up under the membrane. Not only do we want it stuck down without contaminants, but we don’t want any lumps underneath to spoil the aesthetics either. Use a soft brush, and then get down on your hands and knees to have a look across the surface of the roof. Now that your roof decking is clean, it’s time to place the rubber membrane onto your roof.
